| If your interconnects look like
this, throw them out. |
Line level is the voltage of the audio
signal that travels between say the analogue output of a CD player
into the Amplifier. The standard for line level is 1V p-p.
Transmitted at 1V the audio signal is more susceptible to picking
up RFI or EMI than an audio signal travelling at 25V speaker level
unless care is taken with the transmission line - ie the cabling
and connectors.
Most domestic equipment use a single pin and shield RCA
connector, these are usually found in pairs ie White and Red or Red
and Black. RCA Stands for Radio Corporation of America, and
the RCA connector has found it's way into almost every facet of CE
(Consumer Electronic) equipment.
This simple method is unbalanced, each interconnect carries 100%
of that channels audio signal in phase, and is more susceptible to
RFI and EMI than a balanced connection in that any interference
that makes its way past the sheilding system will be added to the
audio signal and be audible. The charasteric impdeance of an
unbalanced audio transmission line is 75 ohms.
