| Baluns convert one transmission
format to another |
Often it is necessary to transfer a line level
audio signal a long distance, for example from an ipod dock in a
bedroom back to the central audio cabinet in the lounge which may
be many metres away.
Often in a retrofit situation there is no screened cable
available but often a route may be established over the homes cat5
smart wiring system.
In this case an RCA to CAT5 balun can be used to convert the
75ohm signal into a 300ohm signal for transmission over a twisted
pair cable. It is also possible to utilise an IP network to
transmit Audio signals, with the use of an IP Encoder, Audio and
Video signals can be converted for transmission onto an IP
network.
With the use of a static IP the destination device can stream
the signal from the source device over the network. The
Slingbox is an example of this technology where you can connect say
your Satellite decoder at home and then view your favourite TV
channels from any web connected PC.
Baluns come in all shapes and sizes for transmitting different
signals over different physical media. There are baluns for
transmitting video over fibre, HDMI over CAT5, Audio over twisted
pair, etc.
